The Chicken vs. The Eagle

Geese of a Feather

“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’” –1 Corinthians 15:33 AMP

I’m sure you’ve heard the term, ‘birds of a feather flock together’.  Meaning, people with same interests, goals, and behaviors stick together.  What do the people you spend time with say about you?
Psalm 1 reads, “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.  But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night.  They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season.  Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.  But not the wicked!  They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.  They will be condemned at the time of judgment.  Sinners will have no place among the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.”

Let’s look at the Chicken vs. the Eagle.  Both a species of bird, but vastly different.

Chickens are gregarious (fond of company) birds and live together in flocks.  They often scratch at the soil to search for seeds or insects, hardly looking up.  Chickens have wings, but are only capable of flying short distances.  They establish a ‘pecking order’, with dominant chickens having priority for food access and nesting locations.

An Eagle is a large bird of prey, renowned for its keen sight and powerful soaring flight.  Most eagles have short tails and broad long wings allowing them to soar high above open plains and water.  Eagles are admired the world over as living symbols of power, freedom, and transcendence.  The eagle is the symbol of mercy in Jewish culture.  Even though the eagle is a bird of prey and it needs to eat small animals to survive, it is kind at heart.  Naturalists are amazed by the delicate and gentle consideration an eagle will show to its children, or eaglets.  A pair of eagles are faithful to each other, staying together year after year, returning to the same nest each season.

Are you spending your time with chickens or eagles?  Chickens have a limited view of the world, only able to fly short distances, accustomed to looking down.  Eagles are powerful, loyal birds, kind and gentle, able to soar and explore.  So I ask you, do you want to cluck with the chickens, or soar with the eagles?

Let Go of the Back-Up Plan

“Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had not been able to bear children for him. But she had an Egyptian servant named Hagar.  So Sarai said to Abram, ‘The Lord has prevented me from having children.  Go and sleep with my servant.  Perhaps I can have children through her.’  And Abram agreed with Sarai’s proposal.” –Genesis 16:12

I’m sure we can all say the Lord has promised us some things.  However, if the promise doesn’t come to pass as quickly as we think it should, we feel the need to help the Lord out.  ‘Ok, Lord, I know you said you would do it, but . . .’  Stop messing in the Lord’s business, and get rid of the back-up plan.  If He said it, He will do it.

In Genesis Chapter 15, the Lord made Abram a promise: “But Abram replied, ‘O Sovereign Lord, what good are all your blessings when I don’t even have a son?  Since you’ve given me no children, Eliezer of Damascus, a servant in my household, will inherit all my wealth.  You have given me no descendents of my own, so one of my servants will be my heir.’  Then the Lord said to him, ‘No your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.’  Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, ‘Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can.  That’s how many descendants you will have!”   Nowhere in this promise did the Lord say, ‘if it doesn’t happen in a year or two, feel free to help me out’.   Just one chapter later, his wife Sarai decides to implement the back-up plan.  Abram knew what the Lord had promised, but he willingly participated in the back-up plan.  Whenever we meddle in the Lord’s business, we alter His blessings for us.  The back-up plan caused dissension in Abram’s household, forcing him to banish his first born child.

How do we know the Lord’s promises will come to pass?  Because His Word says so.  “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent.  Has He said, and will He not do it?  Or has He spoken and will He not make it good and fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19)  So, let go of the back-up plan, and let the Lord complete what He has promised.

"Just Do It."

Image result for just do it logo
“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life.  Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom.  Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows.  For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself.  That’s an act of true freedom.”
–Galatians 5:13-14 MSG

For the past few months God has stirred in me a renewed heart for service.  I come from a family of servants so watching it growing up certainly laid the foundation.  However, I must admit sometimes I get a little tired, wondering if I’m really making a difference.  My time in prayer and meditation revealed to me that’s my fleshly need to ‘see’ the end result.  But if I’m trusting Him, then I should trust that He would not lead me to service if it wasn’t making a difference.  There are countless examples in His Word that call us to service.  So as the Nike slogans says, Just Do It!

With all the violence and division we are bombarded with daily, you can quickly become disillusioned and believe the world has gone completely mad.  In Romans 12:20-21 (MSG) God’s Word says, “Our Scriptures tell us that if you see your enemy hungry, go buy that person lunch, or if he’s thirsty, get him a drink.  Your generosity will surprise him with goodness.  Don’t let evil get the best of you; get the best of evil by doing good.  This is more than a devotional, it is a challenge.  A challenge to help those in need.  A challenge to perform a random act of kindness, expecting nothing in return.

Here are a few suggestions of local organizations that could use your help, or individual ways that you can help:

·        Blessing bags for the homeless:  Fill a plastic storage / freezer bag with individual sized toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth, deodorant, and a snack.  Keep them on hand in your car.

·        Food 4 Thought:  Hazelwood School District’s food pantry which services all 33 schools.  Food 4 Thought provides students who lack access to nutritious food at home with a reliable source of food for evenings, weekends, and other breaks from school. (In the interest of full disclosure, I am the Chairperson).  To make a donation, or host a food drive, contact me at mslaught313@yahoo.com.

·        Angels’ Arms: Angels’ Arms is dedicated to providing and supporting loving homes for foster children by keeping brothers and sisters together within a nurturing family until a forever home is found.  Angels’ Arms currently operates 12 homes.  To donate or volunteer, contact Angels’ Arms at (314) 842-8400, email  info@angelsarms.org, or visit their website at http://angelsarms.org/.

·        Horizon Club:  A 24 hour drop in center for individuals with developmental disabilities without homes that offers showers, laundry, and computer/internet access.  Their wish list includes: socks, underwear (adult sizes), travel size toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush), first aid supplies and brown bag lunches.  Horizon Club is located at 202 N. 23rd Street, St. Louis, MO 63103, (314) 421-0090. (Expected to close the end of August, 2016).

·        Shower to the People:  Shower to the People is a mobile shower truck that provides hygiene services and hot showers to the local homeless population of St. Louis, visiting multiple locations across the greater St. Louis area.  To find out how you can donate, email them at volunteer@showertothepeople.net, or visit their website at www.showertothepeople.net.

Recommit Every Day!

PROVERBS

“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again.” –Proverbs 24:16a

Several weeks ago I decided to seriously commit to a healthier lifestyle. Changing my eating habits, and committing to an exercise routine. In the past one of my downfalls has been overcoming the guilt of a bad day. If I consumed more calories than needed, or if I failed to exercise, I would decide I had messed it all up so I may as well give up. I recently read a fitness article that reprogrammed my thinking. Recommit every day! How simple, but powerful. It has been a tremendous help in keeping me focused and committed. Had a bad day? In the morning hit the reset button and recommit.

What if we applied this principle to our Christian walk? Every morning, hit the reset button, and recommit yourself to Christ daily. This practice will not only strengthen your walk, but it can also serve as a 'check in' or encourage repentance. 'Lord, I know I fell short in ___________, but here I am today, back at it.  Forgive me, and strengthen me for this new day.' Don't give up, recommit every day.

"Know Him For Yourself"

Yes, all the things I once thought were so important are gone from my life. Compared to the high privilege of knowing Christ Jesus as my Master, firsthand, everything I once thought I had going for me is insignificant—dog dung. I’ve dumped it all in the trash so that I could embrace Christ and be embraced by him. I didn’t want some petty, inferior brand of righteousness that comes from keeping a list of rules when I could get the robust kind that comes from trusting Christ—God’s righteousness.” -- Philippians 3:8-9 MSG

How many times have you met a person, and someone else begins to give you their opinion of that person, good or bad. Until you get to know the person for yourself, the other person's opinion sometimes shapes yours.

The same goes for our relationship with Christ. Others' opinion of Christ, good or bad, can shape your opinion of Him and His power, until you get to know Him for yourself.  If your ‘circle’ is part of the turn up, and they see no benefit in having a relationship with Christ, then your initial opinion of Christ is negative.  But, if your ‘circle’ loves Christ, and believes in His infinite power, then your initial opinion of Christ is shaped in a positive light.  However, even with their positive opinion, your knowledge of Christ is still limited until you get to know Him for yourself.  How do you get to know Him for yourself?  Just as you spend time with a person when you’re trying to develop a relationship, the same goes for developing a relationship with Christ.  You spend time with Him by reading His Word, setting aside time for prayer and meditation. As in any relationship, you cannot experience the benefits of that relationship until you get to know them for yourself.  How will you get to know the character of Christ, and all that’s available to you as a child of God if you do not get to know Him for yourself?

With Expectation!

“Listen to my voice in the morning, LORD.
Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.”
Psalm 5:3

There’s just something about communing with God in the stillness of the early morning.  Calm and quiet with no distractions.  Fulfilling the need to check in with God before you begin your day.  And ‘wait expectantly’.  What does that mean, ‘wait expectantly’?

Have you ever had tickets to a concert for your all-time favorite group?  And weeks leading up to the concert you’re excited, you can hardly wait for the day to come.  That’s how we should approach our day, AFTER we’ve checked in with GOD.

Expectantly is defined as:  feeling or thinking that something will happen; expecting something.

To go a little further, synonyms for ‘expectantly’ are: actively, breathlessly, earnestly, energetically, enthusiastically, gladly, hungrily, intently, readily, willingly, zealously.

Hmmmm, is this how you usually approach a new day?  Or do you draaaaag yourself out of bed wishing the day was already over?

Let’s push the reset button and start our day making our requests know to God, and waiting in expectation for what He’s going to do.

F.R.O.G.

I saw this acronym a few years ago, F.R.O.G. (Fully Rely On God), and I thought, ‘how cute’.  There were t-shirts, bumper stickers, bracelets, you know how it goes.  Then I started to wonder, how many of us really do it?  Fully rely on God?  F.R.O.G. means I don’t do things in my OWN power, or rely on other natural beings, but I rely on the matchless power of God.

You buy a new TV stand, and you get home to put it together.  You don't bother with the instructions because you've got this.  How hard could it be.  You put it together, and there are lots of pieces left.  How can that be?  The pieces must be necessary because they put them in the box.  NOW you refer to the instructions.  It would have saved you a lot of time, and been much easier if you had consulted the instructions FIRST.  It's the same way with our lives.  If we consult Him FIRST, and follow HIS instructions, our lives would be much easier.

Can’t sleep at night?  Agonizing over a family member or situation?  You are not practicing F.R.O.G.

Jeremiah 17:5-8 MSG says it like this: “Cursed is the strong one who depends on mere humans, who thinks he can make it on muscle alone and sets GOD aside as dead weight.  He’s like a tumbleweed on the prairie, out of touch with the good earth.  He lives rootless and aimless in a land where nothing grows.  But blessed is the man who trusts me, GOD, the woman who sticks with GOD.  They’re like trees replanted in Eden, putting down roots near rivers – never a worry through the hottest of summers, never dropping a leaf, serene and calm through droughts, bearing fresh fruit every season.”

Chances are you already know what happens when you don’t F.R.O.G.  Now it’s time to experience what happens when you do F.R.O.G.  God is interested in every detail of our lives.  Turn 'it' over to Him, and let Him instruct you on how to handle 'it'.  God’s Word tells us if we rely on HIM and not ourselves, we will be blessed.  We don’t have to worry when we look around and every’thing’ or every’one’ seems to be falling apart, He’s got it.

Here are a few more scriptures to help you F.R.O.G.:
“Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He will do it.” – Psalm 37:5

“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You.  In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid what can mere man do to me?” –Psalm 56:3-4

“My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.” –Psalm 121:2

“Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.” –Isaiah 26:4

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” –Philippians 4:6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” –Proverbs 3:5

Let's F.R.O.G.!
